"I went to the woods because I wanted to live deliberately. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life;
to put to rout all that was not life and not when I had come to die, discover that I had not lived." ~Henry David Thoreau

Getting To Texas

We have all been looking forward to our summer Texas trip for MONTHS.  No, we've been looking forward to it for more than a year because we didn't get to go last summer.  I, for one, have been going through serious Texas summer withdrawals.  I needed this trip, they needed this trip.  Gov flew in to SLC on July 10th and spent a couple of days helping out with house repairs and other things pertaining to the ongoing basement finish.  On Wednesday we volunteered to take the van in to be serviced, something we always do before long road trips so they can check and make sure the car is in good shape and that nothing needs to be fixed.  Well, come to find out the timing belt needed to be replaced along with some other belts, so $732 later we a had a van that was in perfect shape.

After several days of doing laundry and packing for a two week vacation across the country with five kids, we were ready to leave by 7:30 on Friday the 13th.  Luckily, the only incident we had on that day, in spite of superstition, was that Devin threw up his weight in vomit somewhere outside of Shiprock, NM.  It was pretty nasty and inconvenient, but other than that it was a smooth trip.  We stopped for gas in Moab, stopped for lunch in Cortez at our usual place (J. Fargo's), stopped for gas in Gallup where a dug addict transient tried to hit up Gov for either  money or hypodermic needles/syringes.  It was pretty funny, but made Gov really mad because the guy wouldn't leave him alone!  I guess that is what you get for wearing scrubs on road trips.  The guy thought he must be a wealthy physician!  We then made it to our hotel in Abq and the kids had a little time to swim and eat dinner before heading to bed.

We hit the road again by 8:00 the next morning and then stopped in Santa Rosa because Gov had always wanted to see "Blue Hole" which is a 90 foot BLUE sink hole that people use for scuba diving and leisure swimming.  The water was 65 degrees but crystal clear!  People were cliff jumping all around it and had we not been in a schedule, I would have liked to stayed and let the kids swim.  We were back on the road and stopped in Amarillo for lunch at Fazoli's, then stopped outside of Wichita Falls for gas, and then made it to Joshua at 9:15 central time.  All in all we made fantastic time!
